(CNA Reporter Su Ssu-yun, Taipei, June 17) The Paris Olympics and Paralympics will take place in July and August respectively. ELTA held a press conference today announcing that four major broadcasters—Chunghwa Telecom, ELTA TV, Public Television Service (PTS), and Chinese Television System (CTS)—will jointly provide over 2,500 hours of Olympic and Paralympic coverage to cheer for Taiwan’s athletes.
ELTA hosted the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics Joint Broadcast Press Conference this afternoon, attended by Minister of Environment Peng Chi-Ming, Deputy Minister of Education Chang Liao Wan-Chien, Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee President Lin Hong-Dow, Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee Vice President Chang Lei-Ming, Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Kuo Shui-Yi, Public Media Group Chairman Hu Yuan-Hui, and ELTA Chairperson Sally Chen.
President Lai Ching-Te delivered remarks via video, encouraging citizens to cheer for Team Taiwan as the Games approach. Premier Cho Jung-Tai also appeared via video, inviting the public to support Taiwan’s heroes and become the strongest backing for the national team.
This year’s Paris Olympics are regarded as the most environmentally friendly in history. Minister Peng highlighted five ESG priorities: setting carbon neutrality goals, achieving RE100-compliant renewable power use at all venues, utilizing 95% existing or renovated facilities, implementing zero-waste circular resource use, and promoting green transportation.
Deputy Minister Chang Liao Wan-Chien noted that the National Sports Training Center has invested unprecedented resources this year, emphasizing the collection of intelligence to help athletes perform at their best. He expressed special thanks to ELTA for enabling sports fans to support Taiwan’s athletes through live broadcasts.
Guided by the Sports Administration’s Sports Development Fund under the Ministry of Education, the joint broadcast initiative features Chunghwa Telecom, ELTA, PTS, and CTS across multiple platforms—Chunghwa Telecom MOD, OTT services, and terrestrial TV.
Chunghwa Telecom, participating in its fifth consecutive Olympic broadcast, will again provide the most live coverage hours in Taiwan. In addition to offering an exclusive “Paris Olympics Zone,” it features innovations such as AR visuals and ultra-slow-motion replays for a next-level viewing experience. “Medal Alerts” and “Hot Replay” functions allow users to receive push notifications when Team Taiwan competes and instantly revisit key highlights.
ELTA Sports Channels 1–4 will provide over 500 hours of Mandarin commentary, supported by nearly 100 production staff and over 50 professional anchors and analysts to deliver clear and insightful coverage.
OTT streaming will also receive a major upgrade, as Chunghwa Telecom’s Hami Video and ELTA.tv introduce ELTA Olympic Channels 1, 2, and 3, collectively offering seven channels and nearly 1,000 hours of content with professional commentary.
For the Paris Paralympics, ELTA TV will broadcast more than 75 hours of Mandarin-language live programming through Channels 1–4, in collaboration with PTS and CTS, supporting the sports equality spirit of “We All Love Sports – We Are All the Same.”
To protect broadcast rights, ELTA, the exclusive broadcaster for Taiwan, will organize an anti-piracy task force during the Games to take necessary legal action against unauthorized or illegal streaming activities, safeguarding the rights of official broadcasters. (Editor: Lin Hsing-Meng) 1130617
