Postponed for a year due to the pandemic, the “Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” the first to be held in an odd-numbered year, will officially commence on July 23. As the countdown reaches 66 days, the long-awaited broadcast arrangements have been officially announced—Chunghwa Telecom, ELTA TV, Public Television Service (PTS), and Eastern Television (ETTV) will jointly deliver nearly 1,200 hours of coverage, allowing audiences nationwide to follow every move of Team Taiwan anytime, anywhere.
Nearly 1,200 Hours of Olympic Coverage Meeting Viewers’ Demands
Three major television networks—ELTA, PTS, and ETTV—will collaborate to provide 13 channels across four major platforms, including the IPTV platform Chunghwa Telecom MOD, the online OTT platform Hami Video, as well as cable and terrestrial TV.
For the fourth consecutive Summer Olympics, Chunghwa Telecom MOD will once again bring extensive coverage. ELTA Sports 1 and 2 will pioneer 4K Olympic broadcasting for the first time, while ELTA Sports 3 and three original-audio channels—ELTA Olympic 1, 2, and 3—will together deliver over 800 hours of Olympic programming. The OTT platforms Chunghwa Telecom Hami Video and ELTA.tv will also stream all six ELTA channels, offering the same 800 hours of live content. Notably, Hami Video introduces Taiwan’s first-ever Olympic VR broadcast.
To ensure the broadest reach for domestic viewers, PTS will again participate in Olympic coverage via its three terrestrial channels—PTS Main Channel, PTS3, and PTS Taiwanese Channel.
As for cable television, ETTV joins the Olympic broadcast lineup for the first time. Star anchors Pei-Ying Han and sports commentator Yuan-Kai Ting will lead the in-studio coverage, while reporters stationed on-site in Tokyo will provide live reports and interviews. The event will be broadcast live on ETTV News Channel (CH 51) and replayed at various times across ETTV Finance News (CH 57), ETTV Variety (CH 32), and ETTV Super (CH 33), ensuring 24-hour Olympic excitement for viewers.
Across the four platforms, nearly 1,200 hours of total coverage will be available—guaranteed to satisfy both hardcore sports fans and casual audiences alike.
First-Ever 4K and VR Olympic Broadcast A New Viewing Experience
Beyond the extensive broadcast schedule, another highlight is the introduction of 4K and VR coverage on Chunghwa Telecom MOD—marking Taiwan’s first Olympic Games presented in both formats. Since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Taiwan’s Olympic coverage has continued to innovate—from HD in Beijing to 3D in London, and now to 4K and VR in Tokyo. With this evolution from SD to ultra-high-definition 4K, viewers can expect a new visual revolution. The debut of VR broadcasting will employ two technologies: True VR and True View. True VR offers panoramic stereoscopic imagery, allowing audiences to choose their preferred viewing angles—creating an immersive, courtside-like experience. True View, applied exclusively to basketball, uses ten cameras strategically positioned to capture every angle of the action in stunning 360 degrees. These cutting-edge VR technologies provide not only immersion but also a sense of truly being there in person.

Despite the global challenges of the pandemic, the IOC and the Japanese government have implemented strict safety measures to ensure that hosting the “Tokyo 2020 Olympics” demonstrates humanity’s triumph over disease. As of May 18, Team Taiwan has qualified for 27 events across 11 sports, with 33 athletes confirmed, while others continue competing for qualification points. The baseball team’s Olympic berth will depend on the outcome of the final qualifying tournament (known as the “5-for-1” playoff). In badminton, medal contenders include world No.1 Tai Tzu-Ying, men’s singles ace Chou Tien-Chen, “Badminton Prince” Wang Tzu-Wei, and the men’s doubles pair Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin. Final Olympic rankings and seedings will be determined after the qualification deadline on June 15, as Taiwan’s top athletes aim to deliver their best-ever performances.

The gold won by weightlifting champion Hsu Shu-Ching made her the first Taiwanese athlete in history to successfully defend her title and claim back-to-back golds. Fighting Piracy ELTA Urges Support for Legitimate Viewing
With only 66 days left until the symbolic “Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” ELTA TV—the exclusive Taiwan Olympic broadcast agent—will form an anti-piracy task force to protect broadcast rights during the Games. Chairperson Sally Chen stated: “As defenders of intellectual property and authorized rights from the IOC, we urge all viewers to support legitimate broadcasts.” ELTA will actively monitor and pursue unauthorized rebroadcasting or recording, taking all necessary legal actions. Chen warned: “Do not take chances; all violations will be investigated thoroughly.” She also reminded media outlets that any use of Olympic footage must come from authorized sources and comply with IOC regulations. Any public screenings or commercial broadcasts must obtain prior authorization. Even MOD public-viewing subscribers must secure additional rights from the broadcaster for major international events.
